Founded in June 1985 by directors Hayao Miyazaki and Isao Takahata and producer Toshio Suzuki, the studio has produced some of the world's most critically acclaimed and commercially successful animated films. The name "Ghibli" is derived from the Italian word for a hot desert wind, and the studio intended to "blow a new wind through the anime industry."

The studio momentarily stunned fans in 2014 by announcing a brief pause in production following Miyazaki's retirement, sparking concerns about its future. However, Miyazaki retired to work on a new project, and the studio resumed producing films.
